Previously, Michael served as director at two nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C.  He received his MA in African American history from The George Washington University, and is a PhD candidate of African American history at GWU.  His research examines the role of armed self-defense in the lives of African American women in early-20th century Washington, D.C. in order to discern its prevalence, characteristics, and relevance to Black women’s lives in American history.  For his Master’s thesis, Michael utilized a comic book character, Misty Knight, to examine white fantasies of the Black female image, providing a multifaceted, in-depth look at the comic book industry of the 1970s.

An avid photographer, a comic book enthusiast, and an absolutely amateur artist, when he isn’t consuming literary fiction in bountiful mouthfuls, Michael and his husband are chasing their toddler, dividing their time between their homes in Virginia and Nebraska.  Let’s Go Nats!  Go Big Red!
