Derby Museums develops international partnership for a new generation of collaborative leaders

By NAS

Derby Museums has been successful in securing funding and support from Arts Council England and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch) to develop a ‘Transforming Leadership’ programme in a significant international partnership.

Derby Museums is teaming up with National Arts Strategies (NAS) with support from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Social Impact Strategy (CSIS) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch) Foundation to establish the UK Creative Community Fellows Programme (UK CCF). This leadership programme has a dual focus on skill-building and personal development and will help build a more powerful, adaptable and flexible cross-sector network of collaborative leaders working at the intersection of arts, culture and community development, particularly those driving social and physical transformations in their own communities.

“We are absolutely delighted to have the support of Arts Council England in developing the UK Creative Community Fellows programme. Together with our UK and international partners, we will be creating opportunities for a diverse group of community leaders to develop their ideas and skills, deepen connections within their communities, and share knowledge across sector borders. Their time in the CCF programme will result in stronger, more connected networks for change in the UK.”
Hannah Fox, Director of Projects and Programmes, Derby Museums

Building on a successful model developed over five years in the USA by National Arts Strategies, the UK Creative Community Fellowship Programme (UK CCF) will enable cultural organisations, artists, government bodies and communities to benefit from a blended approach to knowledge and skills development in a diversity of leaders, and the delivery of civic services and place-shaping programmes.

“NAS is honored to be part of this dynamic group and to have the chance to work in partnership with the Derby Museums team and our alumni across the UK. The UK Creative Community Fellows Programme will extend and deepen connections across a global community of leaders leading transformational change or positive change in their communities.”
Sunny Widmann, Director, NAS

The UK CCF will begin in 2020 and will support a total of 50 fellows across two years. Through the programme Fellows will learn and apply analytical and strategic tools, supported by a faculty drawn from UK and international partners with expertise in social entrepreneurship, business, leadership, community development, social psychology and design.

The collaboration between Derby Museums and National Arts Strategies, supported by the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Social Impact Strategy (CSIS) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch) will bring these organisations’ knowledge, skills and experience to the unique contexts of people in the UK.

”Leaders from a diverse range of backgrounds who are supported and connected has been shown to be important in those organisations working effectively in and for their communities. We are delighted to be supporting the UK Creative Community Fellows Programme through our work on the ‘civic role of arts organisations’, which has identified leadership training as one of the key levers to change.”
Andrew Barnett, director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch):
