The Chief Executive Program™
Issue-based Education

The Chief Executive Program is tied together by three events that define an arc of exploration of the key, existential issues facing the cultural sector: the new nature of competition, money and relevance. We have crafted the structure and sequence of these events to help this exceptional community of executive leaders reframe their challenges and re-imagine what cultural institutions will be.

Working with faculty from some of the top business schools in the country, we will build each event using our proven structure for issue-based education, in which a compelling – perhaps even uncomfortable – issue provides the organizing theme for the convening. Expert faculty will lead participants through discussions of case studies and frameworks to help them make sense of challenges and find fresh solutions.

The New Nature of Competition | Fall 2011

Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan

Underneath most of the challenges for cultural institutions today is the essential question, “What is our real value and to whom?”The New Nature of Competition will enhance participants’ understanding of the competitive environment in which they work today, illuminating the structure and patterns within the “messy” information they see day to day. The event will deliver effective frameworks for these chief executives to use to analyze their environments and engage their teams and stakeholders.

The New Nature of Money | Spring 2012

RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service, The University of Texas at Austin

The New Nature of Money will challenge participants to be as creative about their business models as they are about their programs. The capital market for nonprofits is rapidly and dramatically changing. This event will explore what a thriving financial model looks like tomorrow for a mission-driven organization and will help participants rethink their own financing strategies.

The New Nature of Relevance | Winter 2013

Harvard Business School

The New Nature of Relevance will help participants understand the context in which value is defined today. The event will give participants access to the latest, most useful thinking about societal dynamics, getting beyond the noise of the 24-hour news cycle to gain insight through meaningful research and models. Participants will look at critical currents in U.S. social structure and context, and explore effective frameworks for designing organizations and programs to thrive in this new context.

Russell Willis Taylor, NAS President and CEO, explains the concept of issue-based education in this video clip.
