The Chief Executive Program™
Selection Criteria + Application Process

Selection Criteria

The Chief Executive Program has been developed for chief executives of cultural institutions in the U.S. and abroad who are positioned to drive and achieve real action. We looked for leaders with strong critical thinking, risk analysis and decision making capabilities; who are open-minded and interested in learning and sharing what they’ve learned; and who see and seize opportunities for change.

We know there are many more qualified leaders than there are spaces available. Decisions were made based on fit with the program – is The Chief Executive Program right for these leaders at this point in their careers and will these leaders represent enough diversity and commitment to be a community of change.

We have selected a cohort of 100 chief executives from a wide range of art and cultural forms, locations, perspectives and experience levels who are proven leaders of lynchpin institutions or noted leaders of innovative organizations and initiatives.

Participant commitment

The Chief Executive Program represents a significant investment – by the participant, by NAS, and by our funders – designed to help Chief Executives generate new solutions to the critical challenges facing the cultural sector. Program participants will be expected to:

  • attend three issue-based educational events – approximately four days every six months
  • experiment and lead change in your organization or community
  • work with NAS to extract lessons from your work to share with the broader cultural sector
  • update the program community on progress of the projects that arise from the program
  • cover travel costs to the three in-person events
  • have your senior team and board chair support your participation in the program

Process

The recruitment period for The Chief Executive Program has concluded and the 100 executives have been selected. The program will begin in the fall of 2011 and run through the end of 2013.
