Applications are now available for two Business of Arts + Culture team seminars, Finance and Extending Your Reach.


Join us in Phoenix December 8-9 for Finance. Bring your leadership team together to develop the knowledge and skills to effectively craft strategies that support both organizational health and mission achievement. Your team will learn how traditional financial concepts such as revenue and cost are related to your ability to achieve your mission. Additionally, you will learn to use financial numbers for predicting effects on mission and organizational achievement.

Extending Your Reach

Extending Your Reach offers a deep dive into partnerships and alliances, exploring the different types of relationships that can help you do more and achieve greater impact. After careful evaluation of your current relationships, your goals for the future and critical tactics for establishing alliances, you will leave this seminar prepared to lead a portfolio of strategic partners and engage in alliances that will help you achieve your vision.

Spring Digital Strategies seminar deadline approaching

There is just over a week left to apply for this spring’s Digital Strategies seminar in New York. Get your team together today!

Digital Strategies is an opportunity for you and your team to spend two-days with NAS and professor Jill Avery digging into your own digital initiatives. Do they map onto your strategic objectives? Do they reflect your organization’s culture? Looking at these questions will help you assess into time, money and structural constraints that can become roadblocks to moving new ideas forward. You’ll leave with a clear picture of how the right balance of digital programs can support your overall objectives, and what resources you’ll need to help those programs thrive.

Teams Selected to Attend Extending Your Reach

Nine teams will attend National Arts Strategies’ new seminar, Extending Your Reach, November 14-15 in Los Angeles. The seminar, led by faculty Jeannette Colyvas (Northwestern University) and Andrew Nelson (University of Oregon) with seminar director Jamey Stowell, will give teams the tools and knowledge to lead a portfolio of strategic partners and engage in alliances that will help them achieve their visions. Teams were selected after a review of applications and represent a variety of disciplines and budget sizes from around the country.



Digital Strategies Teams Selected

Nine teams will attend Digital Strategies. Attending teams will come together October 4-5 in Denver, CO to explore a strategic approach for setting objectives, developing plans, creating programs and tracking results for audience-facing digital initiatives. These teams represent a diverse mix of disciplines, budget sizes and geographic locations. We are excited to present this new seminar to a wonderful group of cultural leaders from around the country!



Extending Your Reach

Do you know what your network map looks like? Do you have a clear picture of your partnership portfolio and where you can leverage relationships to help further your vision?

Do you want to do more, but resources are tight? Partnerships can help, but a poorly conceived or managed partnership can be more hassle than it’s worth. Do you know how to find the right partners and evaluate opportunities?

With a clear understanding of your strategy and the skills to evaluate potential relationships against that strategy, you can initiate partnerships that will help you achieve more. Extending Your Reach gives you the tools to do just that. You’ll work with your team to create and evaluate your network map, then hear from colleagues to see alternate approaches and find new ideas. And, for the first time, all teams will have the option for a pre-seminar consult with NAS to help them prepare!

Extending Your Reach will be presented in Los Angeles November 14-15, 2013. This seminar is presented on a pay-what-you-can basis, meaning you can attend at the price that’s right for you. Travel support is also available to those from outside the Los Angeles area.

National Arts Strategies is excited to announce a a new team seminar, Digital Strategies. Digital Strategies is designed to help your team develop an in-depth understanding of how to apply today’s digital tools to further your mission and more deeply engage your stakeholders.


What’s holding you back?

We’re lucky to work in a field with a bounty of creative and interesting thinkers. In the cultural field, casual conversations can lead to some inspiring and innovative ideas, but these ideas can sometimes get lost in the bustle of our daily work. So often, cultural organizations find themselves stuck executing the same programs and following the same processes they have used for decades. In an under-resourced and highly demanding environment, we often devote our energy to putting out the fires and can have hard time thinking past our immediate needs. So the cycle repeats. Attend Leading Innovation in Nashville

National Arts Strategies will present Leading Innovation July 19-20 in Nashville, TN. Leading Innovation is a two-day seminar in which your team will work  together to clearly define innovation and its role in your organization, to examine your environment for new approaches and to develop specific insights that can be used to integrate innovation into your overall strategy. You’ll explore ways to create effective and innovative ideas by leveraging all of your organization’s talent. The seminar, taught by Vanderbilt professor Dr. David Owens, is a highly interactive, hands-on experience involving class discussions and team exercises incorporating tools that can be shared and re-used for years to come. At Leading Innovation, you will develop your skills to:

  • Analyze constraints on innovation in your organization, foresee obstacles and opportunities and develop a shared vision
  • Develop a process to manage the demands of multiple stakeholders, shifting priorities and the uncertainty inherent in new initiatives
  • Create a culture for innovation and risk-taking that generates new perspectives and challenges existing practice
  • Create a strong customer focus for your organization that anticipates customer needs
